AI under human control
MCP explained for business owners
What the protocol that lets ChatGPT or Claude query your CRM is, what the AI sees when it uses it and what stays under your team's control.
MCP (Model Context Protocol) is an open standard that lets an AI assistant such as ChatGPT or Claude connect to another program and use it. When you connect your CRM through MCP, the AI queries the CRM with specific actions every time you ask it something, and the CRM answers only with what your role lets you see or do. That is how ChatGPT or Claude read your CRM data without anyone exporting a spreadsheet.
Picture the owner of a twelve-person consultancy. Her partner tells her he connected Claude to the CRM and now asks it how much they invoiced this month. She uses ChatGPT to write proposals and has three questions: what MCP is, whether the AI now has access to all of the company's information, and who answers for it if it does something wrong. All three can be answered without knowing how to code.
What MCP is, in plain words
For years, every connection between an AI and a program was built to order, with programming work involved. MCP proposes a common way to do it. The program publishes a list of actions it can perform, such as "find a client", "list overdue invoices" or "create a task", along with the data each one needs. The assistant reads that list and picks the right action when the conversation calls for it.
That is why ChatGPT and Claude show this option as a custom connector. Any assistant that accepts custom connectors, also called MCP connectors, can use the same connection. For you, the technical part comes down to copying an address and pasting it into your assistant.
How an AI reads your CRM data through MCP
Follow one question from start to finish. You write to your assistant: "Which clients have an overdue invoice and also a delayed project?"
- The assistant understands the question and looks, among the actions the CRM publishes, for the ones that can answer it.
- It uses them through your connection, which is in your name.
- The CRM checks who you are and what your role allows before every action. If your role cannot see invoices, the answer contains no invoices.
- With what it gets back, the assistant writes the answer and combines it with what it already knew how to do: search the web, read a file you attached or build a chart.
The conversation stays in your ChatGPT or your Claude. The CRM keeps what changed, who asked for it and when. In AgentticCRM, the connection reaches more than 100 actions across 18 features: some look up and analyze, and most create, change, schedule or import. The AI uses the ones your role allows.
Permissions, the record and undo
The connected AI does not arrive with permissions of its own. It works with the role of the person who connected it, and that role is checked again on every action. If you change someone's role today, what their AI can do for them changes today.
Within that role, ChatGPT or Claude carry out what you ask, and their work is reviewed afterwards. Every change appears in Agent activity and on the record it touched, with the name of the person who asked for it and the connection it came through. From there you undo one change, or everything it did in one request. What cannot be deleted, such as a payment, is corrected with an opposite entry. An action that cannot be undone waits for someone on your team to approve it, and your organization can also decide that a specific action needs approval before that agent performs it.
The Assistant that lives inside AgentticCRM works differently: it proposes every change and waits for your approval before making it. You can use both. The full detail is in how AI changes are approved, recorded and undone.
Five questions before connecting an AI to your CRM
They apply to AgentticCRM and to any other system that offers you an MCP connection:
- Whose permissions does the AI work with? If the answer is "the connection's", ask who sets those permissions and how they are revoked.
- Where do I see what changed, and under whose name was it recorded?
- Can I undo a change without redoing it by hand?
- What happens with actions that cannot be reversed?
- How do I disconnect the AI of someone who leaves the company?
In AgentticCRM, each person connects their assistant from My agents, in their profile, where they see when they last used it and disconnect it with one click. The steps and the first ten requests worth making are in how to connect ChatGPT or Claude to your CRM, and everything it can do is on the ChatGPT and Claude with your CRM page.
One of the first questions an owner usually asks is who paid this week. The AI answers with what is recorded in the CRM, so payments should be entered the same day; we cover that in knowing who paid without asking in the team chat.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need to know how to code to use MCP?
No. In AgentticCRM you copy the connection URL, paste it into ChatGPT or Claude as a custom connector and confirm once. The rest is conversation.
Is MCP the same as an API?
They are related, but they serve different readers. An API is the door through which a program offers its functions to other programs, and each one has its own format. MCP is a common way of describing those functions so that an AI assistant understands what each one is for and when to use it.
Can the AI see what my role does not allow?
No. It works with your user's permissions and no others. If a person cannot see invoices, neither can their AI.
Where do my questions end up?
In your ChatGPT or your Claude. AgentticCRM records what changed, who asked for it and when.
