AI in the CRM
Agentic CRM: what the agent does and what you decide
An AI agent in your CRM can search, prepare and carry out changes. Before you use it, check which permissions it acts with and who controls the result.
An agentic CRM is a CRM where an AI agent can act inside the system. It reads the data, builds a plan of several steps and carries it out: it creates a task or moves a deal to another stage. To evaluate one, look at three things: which permissions the agent acts with, which changes wait for a person to approve them, and where you review and undo what it did.
Chatbot, copilot and agent
The three words tend to appear together in CRM advertising, but they describe different levels of action. A chatbot answers questions. It can tell you how many overdue invoices a client has if someone gave it access to that data, but it changes nothing.
A copilot works inside one screen: it suggests the next step, drafts an email or summarizes a meeting, and you decide whether to use it. You still take every action yourself.
An agent chains steps together and writes to the system. If you ask it to set up the start of a project, it can create the project, its phases and the first tasks with an owner and a date. The practical difference is that the agent changes data your team will rely on the next day.
Why the word gets overused
The term has become a sales argument. Many products sold as agentic are a chat that queries the same data as before and carries out no action. Others do carry out actions but do not say which permissions they use or make clear how a mistake gets fixed.
For a service business, the concrete risk is that the agent sends a client a proposal with the wrong price, closes a deal that was still alive or deletes a contact, and nobody knows who asked for it.
Five questions to evaluate a CRM that claims to be agentic
Before buying, ask to see the answer to these questions inside the product:
- Which permissions does the agent act with? The healthy answer is those of the person who asked, never a broader set of its own.
- What does it carry out without asking, and what waits for your approval? Sending something to a client or deleting data should wait.
- Do you see the plan before it runs? A useful proposal shows every step and the data it will write.
- Where is what it did recorded, and under whose name?
- Can it be undone? And when an action cannot be reversed, does the system tell you first?
If the demo does not answer one of them, ask to see it in a trial account with your own data before you decide.
How it works in AgentticCRM
AgentticCRM offers two ways to work with an agent, and it helps not to mix them up. The first is the Assistant, which lives inside the application. It looks things up on its own, but to write it shows you a card with the steps it would take. You can remove steps or correct fields, and nothing happens until you approve.
The second is connecting your ChatGPT or Claude. You give permission once, and from then on it acts in your name, with your same role. Reversible changes are recorded in Agent activity, where you can review them and put them back the way they were. Sends to clients and irreversible actions require your approval before they run.
In both cases, a connection has no permissions of its own. What counts are the permissions of the person it represents, and with no identified person behind it there is no call, not even to look something up. Every action carried out records who asked for it, who approved it and what changed.
What to leave to the agent
The best starting point is the work that gets lost between screens today: finding a piece of data, comparing what was invoiced with what was collected, preparing the tasks for a new project or writing the first draft of a reply. These tasks are quick to review and, if they go wrong, get fixed before the client notices.
Anything that leaves the company or cannot be undone should go through a person: an email to the client, an issued invoice or a deletion. Frequently asked questions
What is an agentic CRM?
It is a CRM where an AI agent can read data, plan several steps and carry out changes inside the system, such as creating tasks or moving deals, with the permissions of the person who asks.
Does an agentic CRM replace the team?
No. The agent gets search and preparation work done ahead of time. Decisions with the client, sends and irreversible changes stay with a person.
Can I use my ChatGPT or Claude as my CRM's agent?
Yes, if the CRM allows it. In AgentticCRM you connect it from ChatGPT or Claude, confirm once, and it works with your role. You disconnect it whenever you want from My agents, in your profile.
